These tips are given to you
as helpful advice in your job search. They should
apply just about anywhere, but are not meant to be
construed as job requirements or guarantees of any kind.
-
ALWAYS include a
cover letter that is a nicely composed, well versed
description of how your work experience matches the
job requirements. It impresses any hiring manager
that you have taken the time to review the
requirements and line by line show how you meet,
exceed or plan to meet them. This one action alone
will increase your odds of getting an interview by
50%. It also demonstrates a requirement for most
jobs, ability to communicate clearly. Most hiring
managers weight this skill above technical skills.
-
A resume should never
be more that 2 pages (1 page front and back) even at
25 years of IT experience, mine is still two pages.
In writing your resume it helps to think of your
career as a ladder, each previous step shows how you
got to the next step. As you move up, the previous
(older) steps need less detail, your most current
steps need the most detail. I have seen some HR
recommendations, under 5-7 years experience 1 page.
over 10 years 2 pages are acceptable.
-
Cut Fluff (“team
player”, “people person”, “enthusiastic” etc., At
the interview you will get to talk fluff
-
Avoid Fancy Fonts,
over done formatting, tables etc. This usually
makes your resume look immature and non-professional
which in turn reflects on you.
-
Never create a table
or list of Buzzwords (i.e., I have experience in C,
Basic, VMS, VAX, A/S400, Kerberos, MS- Office) this
tells the reader that you know a lot of buzz words
and have probably walked past a PDP-11. If you have
experience in one or more of these areas it will
show up in the work history descriptions for a
particular job.
-
Do include a table
with your Degrees, Certifications, and professional
memberships. Short and sweet. Never include a
superseded certification, such as MCSA and MCSE,
just list the MCSE, if the hiring manger doesn’t
know that an SE is the next step after a SA you
probably don’t want to work there.
-
Don’t include
non-relevant work history, unless this is your first
or second job in the industry. I, like most folk,
had a career before I broke into IT, trust me, no
one cares I was a Chef when I am applying for an IT
job.
-
In your resume, write
in sound bytes not paragraphs… A resume is not a
novel, just a quick way to state verifiable facts.
